ThinkTV has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to create the Dayton STEM Community Engagement Pilot Project.
Dayton is the state’s leader in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and the home of EDvention, a STEM consortium of government, industry, and twenty-five participating school districts. Dayton is also the site of the 2009 FIRST LEGO® League United States Open Championship, a national Lego robotics competition for middle school students sponsored by the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Foundation. By building on our work with Dayton’s existing STEM consortium, the Dayton STEM Community Engagement Pilot Project will create a comprehensive broadcast/video, Web, and outreach STEM awareness campaign, culminating in the FIRST LEGO® League United States Open Championship in May, 2009. The pilot project will deliver:
- Broadcast and Web promotion that raises
awareness of STEM education in our community.
- Promotion and sponsorship of the FIRST LEGO
League United States Open Championship.
- Joint activities between ThinkTV, FIRST LEGO League and Dayton’s STEM consortium
including the sharing of PBS science and math learning resources, robotics documentary screenings, and public appearances that build
our STEM partnership.
The goal of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s
STEM Community Engagement Pilot Grant is to build, strengthen and grow partnerships between public media and partner organizations that ultimately result in STEM learning across the United States. This pilot also seeks
to help local public broadcasters create a sustainable, ongoing engagement around STEM learning.
The STEM Community Engagement Pilot is a key element in the CPB Math and Science Initiative, developed in response to the pressing national need for improved student achievement in STEM subjects.
This initiative brings together local public broadcasting stations, national producers, science educators and organizations, and other partners and stakeholders with FIRST’s broad network of students, scientists, business leaders, and mentors.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is a private, non-profit corporation that was created by Congress in 1967. CPB is not a government agency. It promotes public telecommunications services (television, radio and online) for the American people. CPB invests in more than 1,000 local radio and television stations…their services, their programs and their ideas. These CPB-funded stations reach virtually every household in the country.
