Turner (R-Centerville) and the Northeast-Midwest Institute co-hosted a panel discussion and a housing forum on Wednesday, August 26th, at the Montgomery County Administration Building. The forum had two panels. The first panel included Dayton experts who discussed the impact of the housing crisis in the Miami Valley. The second panel consisted of federal experts who discussed Washington’s responses to this crisis. A media availability with Congressman Turner and the panelists was available immediately following the forum.

The program explored the issues closest to homeowners who are threatened with foreclosure, including how to negotiate with lenders, when to seek assistance, and more. The community service project was a collaboration between the Dayton Daily News, ThinkTV and WYSO public radio. The Forum was streamed live online on the Dayton Daily News, ThinkTV and WYSO web sites. The first hour of the forum was broadcast Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. on WYSO public radio and was carried on ThinkTV’s Ohio Channel in September.
Kevin Riley, Editor of the Dayton Daily News, hosted the Forum; panelists included Dan Foley, Montgomery County Commissioner; Bill Faith, Executive Director of The Coalition on Homelessness & Housing in Ohio; Alfred Patterson Jr.,County Corp; Ken McCall, reporter Dayton Daily News and Emily McCord, WYSO public radio.

As unemployment increases, adjustable rate mortgages re-set and property values fall, homeowners at all ends of the economic spectrum find themselves facing the prospect of foreclosure. In Montgomery County alone more than 41,000 homes have been foreclosed in the last ten years, burdening neighborhoods and local governments with vacant properties that invite crime and lower property values even further.  In response to the crisis that is threatening our neighborhoods and cities, Think TV in partnership with WYSO has launched Facing the Mortgage Crisis, a community initiative designed to connect area residents to trusted foreclosure prevention resources.
